ISO 3834 Part 2 Certified Metal Fabrication

Get welded assemblies with the quality records your project needs.

From our Smithfield, NSW facility, KS Metal Fabrications supports infrastructure, industrial and mechanical services projects across Australia. Share your drawings and welding requirements early so we can confirm scope, inspections and handover records before fabrication starts.

►  What is ISO 3834 Part 2?

ISO 3834-2 sets comprehensive quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials in workshops and at field installation sites. It covers how a fabricator reviews requirements, plans and controls welding, inspects the work and retains quality records.

Certification applies to the fabricator’s defined scope. Ask for the current certificate and check that it covers the work you are procuring.

►  What it means for your project

  • Review drawings, welding codes, acceptance criteria and inspection requirements before work begins.
  • Use suitable documented welding procedures and qualified personnel for the specified work.
  • Agree how materials and welds will be identified and traced where required.
  • Plan inspections, tests and any witness or hold points before production.
  • Agree which quality records you need at handover.

►  When to look for an ISO 3834 Part 2 fabricator

Check your tender, contract and technical specification first. Part 2 is relevant when the project expressly calls for comprehensive welding quality requirements or when your team needs documented controls for complex or high-consequence welded assemblies. Examples include equipment skids, support frames and prefabricated assemblies for transport, utilities and industrial projects. Confirm the applicable requirements with the project team.

ISO 9001 and ISO 3834 Part 2 compared

ISO 9001

Organisation-wide quality management, including how the business manages processes, customer requirements and improvement.

ISO 3834 Part 2

Comprehensive quality requirements specific to fusion welding, including technical review, procedures, personnel, inspection and records.

►  What welding documentation should you ask for?

Agree the document register at quote stage. Depending on the specification and the agreed scope, it may include:

  • Current ISO 3834 Part 2 certificate and scope.
  • Applicable Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), supporting procedure qualification records (PQR or WPQR) and welder qualifications.
  • Material test certificates and agreed traceability records.
  • Inspection and test plans (ITPs), visual inspection records and non-destructive testing reports where specified.
  • A manufacturer’s data report (MDR) when required, with the agreed quality records compiled for handover.

Frequently asked questions

01.  Is ISO 3834 Part 2 required for every fabrication project?

Whether Part 2 is required depends on the contract, technical specification and applicable requirements. Confirm the required quality level and certification evidence before selecting a supplier.

02.  How does ISO 3834 Part 2 relate to AS/NZS 1554?

ISO 3834 Part 2 addresses how welding quality is managed. The AS/NZS 1554 series sets technical requirements for structural steel welding within the scope of its relevant parts. Where both apply, confirm the applicable part, weld category, inspection and acceptance criteria with the project team.

03.  What should I send for a quote?

Send drawings, quantities, material grades, applicable welding standards, inspection requirements, documentation needs and delivery dates. Flag any third-party inspection or hold points at tender stage.
