ISO 3834 Part 2: What Comprehensive Welding Quality Means for Your Project

6 October 2026

KS Metal Fabrications holds ISO 3834 Part 2 certification—the comprehensive quality requirements level for fusion welding of metallic materials.

For engineers, procurement teams and contractors, the value is in how welding is managed: the people, procedures, materials, inspections and records supporting the finished fabrication.

What does “comprehensive” mean?

ISO 3834 defines different levels of welding quality requirements. Part 2 sets out comprehensive requirements, while Parts 3 and 4 address standard and elementary requirements respectively. The appropriate level depends on the work and its requirements.

Part 2 covers welding quality controls in workshops and at field installation sites. A fabricator’s own certificate defines the scope of its certification; the standard’s coverage does not mean every certified business is approved for every welding application. ISO 3834-2

Quality control starts before welding

A fabrication package needs more than a finished weld. Requirements must be understood, suitable procedures and personnel selected, and inspection activities planned.

Weld Australia describes ISO 3834 as a production-control framework covering the welding process. Its requirements address areas including technical review, production planning, subcontracted activities, materials and consumables, qualified personnel, inspection and corrective action. For a buyer, this creates a practical basis for discussing how the work will be controlled and what evidence will be available at handover.

What this means when working with KS

At our Smithfield, Western Sydney facility, KS combines fabrication capabilities with documented welding quality controls.

Our published capabilities include qualified welders, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), material test certificates and welding inspection records. These support the manufacture of structural assemblies, equipment skids, frames and other fabricated components. Explore KS’s capabilities

The documentation required for an individual job should be agreed during the review of its scope. That allows the fabrication team and customer to establish which records, inspections and approvals are needed before production begins.

For example, a contractor ordering a welded equipment frame may require material certificates, welding records and inspection reports as part of the handover package. Identifying those requirements when requesting the quote gives both parties a clearer basis for planning and pricing the work.

Supporting infrastructure and transport project teams

For contractors delivering infrastructure, transport, utilities or industrial projects, welding certification is one part of assessing a fabrication partner.

The next step is to match the supplier’s certification scope and manufacturing capability to the particular package. Project specifications, applicable fabrication standards, inspection requirements and client approvals still need to be reviewed.

ISO 3834 Part 2 certification does not, by itself, establish RMS or Transport for NSW prequalification, or approval to undertake every transport-related fabrication package.

KS welcomes discussions with tendering and delivery teams to assess fabrication requirements against our capabilities and certification scope.

What to include with your enquiry

Alongside drawings, quantities and material specifications, share any known:

  • Welding standards and project-specific requirements.

  • Inspection and test plans, including hold or witness points.

  • Material traceability and documentation requirements.

  • Third-party inspection or client approval requirements.

  • Quote deadlines and delivery stages.

If these are still being developed, identify what is confirmed and what remains outstanding. That gives the team a clearer starting point for reviewing your package.

Discuss your fabrication requirements

KS Metal Fabrications provides engineering-led metal fabrication from Smithfield, supporting projects across Sydney and Australia.
