ISO 9001 and ISO 3834: What Fabrication Buyers Need to Know
ISO certifications are frequently displayed on fabrication capability statements.
But for procurement teams and project managers, the more useful question is:
What does the certification actually tell me about the supplier?
Two standards relevant to metal fabrication are ISO 9001 and ISO 3834.
They address different parts of the quality system.
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is a quality management system standard.
At a practical level, it establishes a structured framework for how an organisation manages and controls its processes.
For a fabrication buyer, this matters because project quality depends on more than whether the finished component looks correct.
The organisation also needs systems around activities such as:
document control;
production processes;
quality records;
inspection;
corrective actions; and
traceability.
ISO 9001 provides a broader organisational quality framework across these processes.
What is ISO 3834?
ISO 3834 addresses quality requirements specifically for fusion welding of metallic materials.
Welding is a specialised manufacturing process. Once a weld has been completed, some aspects of its quality cannot simply be verified by looking at the finished assembly.
Quality therefore needs to be controlled throughout the welding process.
This may involve:
qualified welding personnel;
Welding Procedure Specifications;
Procedure Qualification Records;
inspection requirements;
material information; and
welding quality records.
Why are both relevant?
The two standards perform different functions.
A useful simplified distinction is:
ISO 9001 — how the organisation manages quality.
ISO 3834 — how welding quality is controlled.
For projects where welded fabrication is compliance-critical, the welding-specific system becomes particularly relevant.
What documentation should buyers ask about?
Certification should not be treated as a logo on a capability statement.
Depending on the project requirements, buyers may need to establish whether the fabricator can provide:
material test certificates;
welding procedures;
welder qualifications;
dimensional inspection records;
welding inspection records;
compliance certificates;
traceability information; and
Manufacturing Data Records.
The required documentation should be identified before fabrication begins.
Certification does not replace the project specification
ISO certification provides evidence of the supplier's quality systems.
It does not remove the need for the project team to specify its own technical, inspection and documentation requirements.
Those requirements should still be included in drawings, specifications and the fabrication RFQ.
